What Is the File Extension for a Spreadsheet Template?

One of the most popular applications in use today is the Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. Excel spreadsheet files are easily differentiated from other files by the file extension. The file extension for an Excel spreadsheet created in Office releases prior to Office 2007 is .xls. Excel 2007 uses several different extensions.

  1. File Extensions

    • For all Microsoft Excel spreadsheet files, including templates, created in Excel versions before Office 2007 was released, the file extension is .xls. There are a couple of Excel 2007 files extensions, depending on the type of workbook being used. The two most common are .xlsx and .xlsm.

    Compatibility Issues

    • Because Microsoft Excel spreadsheet templates created in Office 2007 have different functions that are not available in previous Office releases, the files cannot be opened by previous versions of Excel. This is partly due to the fact that there are no file associations created for the new file extensions in the computer's registry.

    Spreadsheet Template Uses

    • Microsoft Excel templates are extremely popular with professionals, especially where mathematics are involved. For instance, scientists and accountants both use and create spreadsheet templates.

    File Associations

    • A saved file with an .xls extension will be opened with Microsoft Excel automatically. If Excel is not loaded onto the computer, it will not be able to display the data in the file.

    Registry Errors

    • If your computer fails to open a file with an .xls file extension, and Microsoft Excel is loaded onto your PC, there may be a file association error in the registry, which will need to be corrected before the PC will automatically open the file.
