If you do not have a shed or garage, an outdoor storage cabinet may meet your needs. These cabinets can range in size from fairly small to quite large, and can be placed in the garden, on a patio or deck, or near the swimming pool. They work very well for holding items needed in the garden or pool, children's toys or accessories for outdoor grilling. With a variety of styles available, you are sure to be able to find one that meets your needs, from both a functional and a decorative perspective.

Outdoor storage cabinets provide secure, weather proof storage outside your home. Some cabinets offer nearly as much storage space as a small shed while others offer room to store cushions or other items under bench style seats. You can also find outdoor storage with counter height surfaces that can be used for food preparation when grilling or as a potting bench. When shopping for one, consider weight limits and whether you require more vertical or horizontal storage space.

While many people opt for plastic storage cabinets produced by Rubbermaid and similar manufacturers, there are other options available as well. You can purchase or build wooden outdoor cabinets. Do keep in mind that these may be less water and weatherproof. If building a cabinet, be sure to thoroughly seal the wood. If you need storage on a covered patio or other area protected from the weather, rattan or wicker may be an option for storing small or light items outside.

If you need only a small amount of storage space, consider a storage bench. These versatile pieces offer both seating and storage. They work well for holding cushions, grilling supplies, table ware and small toys. A larger freestanding cabinet can hold children's toys, gear for the pool, charcoal briquettes, hoses or gardening supplies. If you need to store outdoor furniture in the off season, large garden items, or big ride on toys, you may want a very large cabinet. The largest outdoor storage cabinets, especially if they offer vertical storage space, can hold nearly as much as a small shed.

Storage is at a premium in many homes. If you live in an apartment, you may have balcony or deck available for extra storage and an outdoor storage cabinet is ideal to hold holiday or out of season items. A good outdoor storage cabinet near your grilling area can keep things tidy and make it easier to barbecue anytime you like. If you have a pool, a lockable outdoor cabinet is ideal for holding pool chemicals and keeping them safe from children. Gardeners may find that the weatherproof space can preserve potting soils, fertilisers and other products nicely.

Be sure that your outdoor cabinet is weighted appropriately to prevent tipping. Consider the usual weather conditions in your region and account for them when bracing and weighting your cabinet. This is especially important if it is often empty or minimally filled. You should also be certain that cabinets containing chemicals, pesticides or other potential dangers to children are animals are kept locked. Most commercial storage cabinets include space for a padlock.
